Beijing, August 26 /Xinhua/ — Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered all efforts to be made to search for and rescue people missing as a result of a landslide that occurred near the “Gyerong” checkpoint in the Xichang Autonomous Region /Southwest China/ on Wednesday morning.
Xi Jinping, who is also the General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, demanded further efforts to evacuate and accommodate residents in danger and to provide timely medical assistance to the wounded in order to minimize human casualties.
He gave important instructions after a landslide occurred at around 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday in Nepal, resulting in a significant number of deaths, injuries, and missing persons at the Gyirong checkpoint in Gyirong County.
Xi Jinping also emphasized the need to strengthen monitoring and early warning, ensure that rescue operations are conducted using scientifically sound methods, and prevent the occurrence of secondary disasters.
Noting that China is currently in a critical period of combating floods, he ordered various regions and relevant departments to adhere to an approach focused on preparing for the worst-case scenarios and extreme situations, to fully implement measures for flood and typhoon prevention, as well as to strengthen efforts to identify and eliminate potential risks and hidden dangers.
He demanded decisive actions to prevent major and particularly major disasters and accidents, as well as to comprehensively ensure the safety of the lives and property of the masses.
Premier of the State Council of the PRC Li Qiang also gave instructions, emphasizing the urgent need to clarify the number of missing persons and those affected by the disaster, and to mobilize forces to carry out rescue operations and provide emergency assistance.
Li Qiang, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to strengthen contacts and coordination with the relevant countries, promptly inform them of the situation, and work together to properly carry out rescue operations.
Vice Premier of the State Council of the PRC Zhang Guoqing, who is also a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, headed a group of responsible leaders of the relevant departments and urgently went to the scene to direct the rescue operation and the work on eliminating the consequences of the incident.
