UN humanitarian agencies have launched a large-scale emergency response operation to assist those affected by the severe flooding in China and Nepal, which has caused numerous casualties and significant damage. According to UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, the Organization’s entities and its humanitarian partners are already providing support to local authorities.
“The Secretary-General is deeply saddened by the consequences of the floods we have witnessed today in Nepal and China,” said Dujarric. “They have taken many lives, caused people to go missing, and triggered widespread destruction.”
According to Nepalese authorities, about 10,000 families are in immediate need of assistance. Markets, roads, bridges, hydropower facilities, and entire villages have been washed away or damaged. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), traffic on many roads in the region is interrupted, and electricity supply is disrupted. “We are also facilitating a rapid assessment of the disaster’s scale,” Dujarric said.
The spokesperson added that the UN office in China reports destruction, numerous casualties, and significant damage in the Tibet Autonomous Region. “We, of course, stand ready to support the efforts of the Chinese government,” Dujarric added.
The World Food Programme provides emergency food rations to those affected and offers logistical support to national authorities. Two staff members of the World Health Organization are already working on site. WHO has medical kits in the region sufficient for about 10,000 people, as well as tents and logistical equipment.
Starting Thursday, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) will begin sending staff and vehicles with humanitarian supplies to the affected region. The United Nations Development Programme is mobilizing data management specialists and sending volunteers to the region. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is assisting with satellite imagery and conducting analysis of the area affected by the floods.
UN humanitarian partners are also mobilizing their efforts: the organization Save the Children is sending staff to the affected Nuwakot area, and the Nepal Red Cross has dispatched 200 shelter kits for those left homeless.
