Beijing, August 25 /Xinhua/ — Chinese lawmakers have begun reviewing a draft amendment to the Lawyers Law of the People’s Republic of China. The bill encourages and supports lawyers and law firms to participate in the process of providing publicly beneficial legal services and offering legal assistance in accordance with the law.
This document is presented for consideration in the second reading at the ongoing 24th session of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPCSC) of the 14th convocation.
The 24th session of the NPC Standing Committee of the 14th convocation is taking place from Tuesday to Friday.
The document also addresses the development of the legal services sector related to foreign countries and the activation of training for lawyers specializing in international legal issues.
Support is envisaged for law firms to improve the provision of services related to foreign countries and to encourage broader international exchanges and cooperation.
Furthermore, according to the draft amendments, the activities of a practicing lawyer legally authorized are protected by law, and no organization or private individual may infringe upon his legal rights and interests.
People’s courts, prosecutor’s offices, public security bodies, and other competent structures have been required to establish or improve the existing system for protecting the rights of practicing lawyers.
