UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the attack on a peacekeeping patrol near the settlement of Padjut in Jonglei State, South Sudan. On Monday, unknown armed individuals ambushed the patrol.
As a result of the attack, two UN peacekeepers from Ethiopia were killed. Seven more people were injured: three peacekeepers, two officers of the South Sudan National Police Service, and two civilians.
The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has deployed rapid response forces to the area to ensure security. The head of UNMISS and the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for South Sudan, Anita Kiki Gbeho, stated that “such acts of violence” against mission personnel are “unacceptable.”
“I extend my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the fallen peacekeepers and wish a speedy recovery to the injured,” she said.
The mission recalls that under international law, attacks on UN peacekeepers may be classified as war crimes.
“I urge the competent authorities to conduct a thorough and prompt investigation to ensure that those responsible are held accountable,” Gbeho added.
