Beijing, August 22 /Xinhua/ — Chinese and Peruvian archaeological institutions on Friday signed an agreement to conduct research on the ancient Caral civilization in Peru. This marks the first time Chinese archaeological institutions will officially begin joint archaeological work in South America.
A cooperation agreement was signed by the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Social Sciences of China, the Caral Archaeological Zone of the Ministry of Culture of Peru, and the Professional School of Archaeology of the National University of San Marcos.
The Caral civilization arose on the northern coast of Peru and existed approximately from 3000 BCE to 1800 BCE. It is considered the oldest of all civilizations discovered in the Americas to date.
Chinese and Peruvian teams will conduct comprehensive archaeological research at the ruins of the Caral civilization, including field studies and excavations, scientific and technological archaeological investigations, cultural heritage preservation, and joint training of archaeologist specialists. -0-
