Beijing, August 21 /Xinhua/ — Early rice production in China in 2026 remained generally stable with a slight increase in planted area. This is evidenced by official data from the National Bureau of Statistics /NBS/ of China, published on Friday.
Data show that the gross early rice harvest amounted to 28.29 million tons, remaining above the 28 million ton mark for the sixth consecutive year.
The sown area increased by 22 thousand mu /about 1467 hectares/ compared to the previous year and reached 71.164 million mu.
According to the data, production volume decreased by 220 thousand tons, or 0.8 percent year-on-year, and the average yield dropped by 0.8 percent to 397.6 kg per hectare.
As noted by the official representative of the Main Investigation Department, Wei Fenghua, after planting the weather conditions were generally favorable, but prolonged heavy rains and typhoons later negatively affected production in some key growing areas in southern China.
According to him, this year China has increased support for grain production by maintaining minimum purchase prices for early indica rice and subsidies for protecting the fertility of agricultural land, while simultaneously enhancing support for crop rotation and strengthening other measures to stabilize farmers’ expectations for the harvests.
In addition, efforts to increase grain production capacity continue. More than 66.7 million hectares of high-quality agricultural land have been established nationwide, and the share of domestic varieties of agricultural crops exceeds 95 percent of the country’s total sown area.
Wei Fenghua emphasized that stable early rice production combined with the growth in summer grain harvest has laid a solid foundation for a bountiful grain harvest this year.
According to previously published data from the GSUs, the gross harvest of summer grains in China this year amounted to 150.75 million tons, increasing by 0.7 percent year-on-year and exceeding the 150 million ton mark for the first time. –0–
