On the stage of VTB “Classics Inspire” on Chistoprudny Boulevard on August 22 at 17:00, a performance of a dramatic play will take place “Waltz in 2/4” Russian Drama Theater within the framework of the festival “Theatre Boulevard”. The director of the production is Anton Nepomnyashchy. The leading roles are played by Grigory Dantsiger and Marusya Berezhnaya.
The play “Waltz in 2/4” is based on real events that took place in August 2015 in Donbass. The performance was created with the direct involvement and support of veterans of the special military operation. It is one of the first plays staged in Russia on this topic. The premiere took place on August 24, 2023, at the Moscow Folklore Center.
According to the plot, a badly wounded soldier and a young woman from the enemy camp meet early in the morning in a house destroyed after a bombing. The heroine is initially obsessed with the desire to kill the soldier, who is losing his last strength but maintains his composure and sense of humor. Two implacable enemies begin an honest conversation about the past, present, and future. The emotional quarrel gradually turns into a heartfelt dialogue between the man and the woman, who develop sympathy for each other. The unexpected encounter makes the heroine see contemporary events in a new light for the first time and realize the significance of historical memory and brotherly unity.
The dramatic play “Waltz in 2/4 Time” tells a story of love and forgiveness, which have a place even on the battlefield. The production shows how confrontation and hatred gradually give way to humanity. A woman’s frantic impulse to finish off a wounded soldier is replaced by a timid desire to dance with him to the familiar waltz melody from childhood, to which their grandmothers and grandfathers—the heroes of the Great Victory—once danced many years ago. From hatred to love, from cruelty to humanity, from attempts to forget historical truth to acknowledging it—there are really just a few important steps in the rhythm of a waltz. But the heartfelt dance is suddenly interrupted by the beginning of shelling.
