This summer, specialists from the Traffic Management Center (TMC) developed a project to re-mark the Besedinskaya interchange. They conducted a thorough analysis of the traffic situation beforehand. Previously, traffic jams often occurred here: some sections lacked lanes, and the entrances and exits were not protected by islands.
“Besedinskaya interchange is an important transport hub on the southern part of the Moscow Ring Road, where heavy traffic previously caused congestion and minor accidents. Specialists from the Center for Traffic Management developed a re-marking project: they added protected transition-acceleration lanes, expanded exits, and separated flows. As a result, throughput increased by 30–60 percent, and the number of minor accidents may decrease by one and a half to two times. We continue to improve the comfort and safety of the city’s roads under the instructions of Sergey Sobyanin as part of the transport development strategy until 2030,” noted the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry.
Besedinskaya Interchange is an important multi-level transport hub in the south of Moscow. It connects the Zyablikovo, Brateyevo, Maryino, and Lyublino districts with the Moscow Ring Road (MKAD), the Southern Gates bus station, a shopping center, and the surrounding region. The interchange’s high traffic capacity is the key to the daily comfort of hundreds of thousands of motorists.
Under the project of the TsODD, several sections were improved. On the exits from the village of Besedy to the outer side of the MKAD and to Besedinskoye Highway, islands were arranged to shield lanes. Shielded transitional-acceleration lanes were made on the exit from the inner side of the MKAD to Besedinskoye Highway heading towards the region, as well as on the exit from the highway to the outer side of the MKAD.
The exit from Besedinskoye Highway to the inner side of the MKAD was allowed from two lanes. A second lane was added on the bridge of Besedinskoye Highway heading toward the region: one lane is intended for traffic toward the Moscow region, and the second is for exiting to the outer side of the MKAD.
Thanks to these measures, traffic flows are separated in advance, and drivers immediately take the appropriate lane without interfering with the neighboring one. As a result of the changes, according to TsODD specialists’ calculations, the interchange’s throughput has increased by 30–60 percent.
Since 2018, projects for road marking redesign have been actively implemented in the capital. Every year, specialists from the Traffic Management Center develop about 100 such solutions on major roads and important interchanges. Changing road markings allows improving driving conditions without excessive costs or the need for prolonged lane closures.
Adding lanes through re-striping is implemented faster than traditional road widening, making the program effective under heavy traffic conditions both in confined urban spaces and on high-speed highways with intense traffic.
