Beijing, August 19 /Xinhua/ — China agrees with the statement of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov about Japan. This was stated on Wednesday by the official spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lin Jian.
On August 17, S. Lavrov reminded the media that Japan was originally designated in the UN Charter as an “enemy state.” The Russian minister emphasized that Japan joined the UN after undergoing a process of atonement for its militaristic policies and committed crimes, fully acknowledging the principles enshrined in the UN Charter.
Commenting on S. Lavrov’s words, Lin Jian pointed out that the “provisions on enemy states” are an important part of the UN Charter.
The Chinese diplomat noted that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the Tokyo Trials. According to him, a reminder of these provisions and their mandatory force is especially important for protecting the results of the Victory in the War of Resistance of the Chinese people against the Japanese invaders and in the World Anti-Fascist War, as well as for preventing the resurgence of militarism.
Lin Jian added that Japan also needs to be reminded: such existing international legal documents as the Cairo Declaration, Potsdam Declaration, and the Act of Japan’s Surrender enshrined Japan’s international obligations as a defeated state and became the cornerstone of the post-war international order.
As noted by the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the PRC, fulfilling these obligations became a political and legal prerequisite for Japan’s return to the international community.
