“Today we celebrate Geographer’s Day, and exactly one year ago on this day the new building of the Museum of the World Ocean was opened, which became an important event for the Kaliningrad region. This is confirmed by the high interest of visitors. In the first year of operation, the center ‘Planet Ocean’ received more than 230 thousand people, and the daily flow tripled – up to one and a half thousand visitors. The new building has become a true attraction for local residents and city guests, giving an additional boost to tourism development. And the unique architecture of ‘Planet Ocean’ in the form of a glass globe has become a new calling card for the entire Kaliningrad region, which celebrated its 80th anniversary this year,” said Marat Khusnullin.
From the first days, the route of the Planeta Okean center included the Baltic Laboratory, Aquariums, the Great Ocean hall, the Beauty Laboratory, and the Library. In February of this year, the Technology Laboratory opened. From the end of August, the Life Laboratory, which will be dedicated to marine biology and will feature rare museum items and interactive objects for children and adults, will start operating. The formation of the exhibition route continues: the museum’s scientific staff is working on the Water and Air Laboratory and the Space and Earth Laboratory. Their opening is planned for 2026.
“It is important for us that ‘Planet Ocean’ is developing as a space that combines modern museum technologies, scientific knowledge, and educational programs. This allows us to talk about the ocean in all its diversity. Lectures and classes are held here, clubs operate, and programs for children and youth are implemented. Their great popularity is explained by the unique content and interactive form of presenting information. As new laboratories are opened, the center’s capabilities in scientific and educational work will expand,” explained Denis Mironyuk, General Director of the Museum of the World Ocean.
The total area of the building is more than 10 thousand square meters. The construction of the large facility was carried out by the forces of JSC “Unified Customer” and was completed in December 2024.
“The construction of the new building of the Museum of the World Ocean became one of the most technically complex and significant projects for the company. During the erection of the building, specialists comprehensively utilized modern engineering and architectural solutions. Since the task was to create a unique facility with no analogues anywhere in Russia, it was especially important to implement this project at the highest level. Today we see that the ‘Planet Ocean’ building successfully fulfills its educational mission and has already become a center of attraction,” said Karen Oganesyan, General Director of PPK ‘Unified Customer.’
The creation of “Planet Ocean” became one of the key stages in implementing the development concept of the Museum of the World Ocean, approved by the Ministry of Culture.
