At GSOM Schoolchildren Tried on the Role of Technology Entrepreneurs

How to turn an interesting idea into a real product? Where does a startup begin, where to find investors, and how to convince them of the project’s potential in just a few minutes? High school students received answers to these questions at the master class “From Idea to Startup,” which took place at the State University of Management as part of the Advanced Engineering School “RosGeoTech” project.

Engineering that creates the technologies of the future
Before the master class began, Maxim Pletnyov, Head of the Research Coordination Department at GUU, introduced the schoolchildren to the work of the Advanced Engineering School “RosGeoTech.”

Leading engineering schools or PISH, are educational and scientific centers where universities, together with technology companies, train specialists for high-tech industries and work on real engineering challenges.

“RosGeoTech” combines several promising directions at once: alternative energy, power engineering, oil and gas technologies, robotics, as well as the development of autonomous and unmanned systems.

Andrey Luzhetskiy, the head of the Advanced Engineering School, addressed the meeting participants with a welcoming speech.

How does an idea turn into a startup?

The main part of the meeting was conducted by the director of the GUU business incubator, assistant of the Department of Logistics and Transport-Technological Systems, Dmitry Rogov. Together with the students, he analyzed the path of a technology project step by step: from the initial idea to the launch of the finished product on the market.

The guys learned how a startup differs from a regular business, what stages a young project goes through, and why even a promising idea is not enough for success. In order for the product to truly be in demand, it is necessary to understand the market, know your future consumer, and be able to evaluate the project’s economics.

Using examples of Russian and foreign companies, the participants became acquainted with the basic concepts of technological entrepreneurship.

One of them is an MVP, or minimum viable product. It is the simplest working version of the future product that can be shown to initial users to test the idea in practice and understand if they really need it.

The schoolchildren also figured out what venture investments are — investments in young promising projects that can grow rapidly, and unit economics. The latter helps answer one of the main questions of any business: how much the company earns and spends per customer or per sale.
The knowledge gained could be immediately applied in practice by the participants.
A few minutes to interest the investor

A separate part of the master class was dedicated to pitching — a short and convincing presentation of the project in front of potential investors or partners.

Dmitry Rogov told schoolchildren how to present a startup in such a way as to explain its value and engage the audience within a limited time. The participants analyzed the presentation structure, key meaningful highlights, and common mistakes, and also looked at successful examples of layout and material visualization.

The main principle is simple — a good technology must not only be developed, it also needs to be clearly presented to those who can help the project move to the next stage.

The master class allowed schoolchildren to see how knowledge from mathematics, physics, computer science, and other exact sciences can be transformed into real engineering solutions and technological projects.

The meeting became part of efforts to attract talented schoolchildren to the PISH “RosGeoTech” project. One of its key tasks is to help future students get acquainted with modern engineering even before entering university and to prepare a new generation of specialists who will create the technologies of the future.
