In Veliky Ustyug, at the branch of the Moscow Zoo, subordinate to the capital’s Department of Culture, a calf was born. Offspring came into the world on July 25 to Highland cows Mila and Gavryusha.
Zoo staff closely monitor the condition of the heifer. They document the dynamics of her growth and development. Currently, the little one is nursing on mother’s milk — this is the basis of her diet in the first months of life. A little later, she will begin to try adult food, which her parents eat. The Highland cows’ menu includes vegetables, specialized compound feeds, bran, hay, and herbal pelleted meal. In summer, fresh green grass is added to the diet.
“Mila and Gavryusha arrived at the zoo in December 2022, and now this pair can rightfully be called parents of many children — they already have their third baby. The birth went well: Mila managed perfectly on her own, and our specialists immediately examined both the mother and the newborn calf after its birth — they are in perfect condition,” said Svetlana Akulova, General Director of the Moscow Zoo.
Highland is a Scottish breed of cattle. They are distinguished by their striking appearance and expressive horns. The long wavy double-layered coat reliably protects the animals from cold and wind and makes them remarkably hardy. In the conditions of Veliky Ustyug, such qualities are especially valuable.
At the beginning of 2025, the Moscow Zoo set a world record for the number of animal species exhibited: it housed 1,253 species. By 2026, their number approached 1,280.
