In the Trans-Baikal Territory, the opening of the Great Sukhotino Trail took place — a 19-kilometer route running through the territory of the ethno-archaeological park “Sukhotino” on the specially protected natural area “Titovskaya Sopka” in the southern part of Chita, the region’s capital. The trail is located a 7-minute drive from the city center.
“The development of tourism and the creation of a comfortable living environment are among the priority tasks set by the President of Russia. The opening of the Bolshaya Sukhotinskaya trail is another step of Zabaykalsky Krai in this direction. The unique nature and history of the Far East should be accessible to everyone. We continue systematic work to promote the region: the “Far East – Land of Adventures” contest helps to discover new routes, and the Far Eastern contest of the Cinema Foundation attracts film production to showcase the beauty of our territories on big screens. I am confident that the trail will become not only a place for recreation but also a platform for filming, inspiring authors to new projects,” said Deputy Chairman of the Government – Plenipotentiary Representative of the President in the Far Eastern Federal District, Yuri Trutnev.
The “Far East Trails” project is being implemented under the instructions of Yuri Trutnev using funds from the presidential Far Eastern unified subsidy of the Ministry for the Development of the Russian Far East, with the support of the Far East and Arctic Development Corporation (FEDC). Within the program, 18 tourist routes with a total length of 126.8 km are being developed in nine regions of the Far Eastern Federal District. The Bolshaya Sukhotińskaya trail became the third completed facility in the project after the opening of the Health Trail in the Republic of Buryatia and the “Sacred Path” trail in the Transbaikal Territory.
“Today we are opening a new attraction point for Zabaykalsky Krai and the entire Far East. Zabaykalsky Krai annually increases by 40–50% in tourists, and by 2026 we plan to reach 150 thousand organized guests. The Great Sukhotinskaya Trail is a route within walking distance from the city, which makes the unique heritage of Titovskaya Sopka part of the everyday tourist offering. The more such accessible and well-equipped points there are, the faster we will move from one-time trips to a systematic year-round flow, which means we will be able to confidently talk about tourism as a full-fledged sector of the region’s economy,” noted the governor of Zabaykalsky Krai, Alexander Osipov.
The new walking route connects 18 unique archaeological sites, including ancient burials, settlements, and rock drawings. For the comfort and safety of visitors, modern infrastructure has been installed along the trail: four themed entrance groups («General», «Chum», «Pagoda», «Ostrog»), three viewing platforms, 80 resting benches, an art gazebo, a children’s play area, camping decks, and sanitary modules. The trail surface is made from eco-friendly materials – gravel bedding, wooden decks, and decks made from eco-timber. A video surveillance system has also been installed to ensure the safety of the route.
“The opening of the Great Sukhotinskaya Trail is an important stage in the project implementation. We paid special attention to the quality of the surface and the safety of the route: eco-friendly materials were used, and all engineering solutions were adapted to the complex terrain of Titovskaya Sopka. During the design, every detail was taken into account—from drainage systems to rest areas—so that the trail will serve for many years. This route combines sports, history, and unity with nature. As an athlete, I am convinced that activities in the fresh air strengthen the body and spirit. The trail will become a magnet for active people and set a new standard for healthy recreation,” said the project leader of “Trails of the Far East,” four-time world karate champion Khaid Mantaev.
The emergence of new tourist destinations attracts the attention of travelers and influences the economic development of the region. This was explained by Julia Ivanova, Deputy Director of the Investment Department of KRDV. “I congratulate the residents of Chita and the Trans-Baikal Territory on the opening of the Great Sukhotin Trail. Such routes make truly “places of power” accessible – unique natural and historical spots that were previously hard to reach. Today, the appearance of Trans-Baikal is changing: modern public spaces are emerging, territories are being improved, and new points of attraction are being created. This gives not only visitors but also the local residents the opportunity to feel changes in life and see their land in a new way. When everything at home is beautiful, comfortable, and well-maintained, we invite friends and tourists with special pride, telling them about our nature, history, and culture. The more such iconic sites there are, the more attractive the Far East becomes for guests, and along with this, small and medium-sized businesses, the service sector, and the macroregion’s economy develop,” she noted.
The trail is accessible year-round for walking, cycling, and horseback riding, and also has adapted areas for people with limited mobility. The planned annual attendance for the route is up to 30,000 people.
