Zhengzhou, August 13 /Xinhua/ — In Pindingshan city, Henan Province /Central China/, thousands of people were evacuated after several days of heavy rain caused rivers to overflow and a dam to break, local authorities informed on Thursday.
More than 2,000 people were evacuated to safe locations after a dam breach occurred on the Baijuh River section in Jiaxian County on Wednesday evening. The emergency incident was caused by heavy rainfall and water release from reservoirs located upstream. No reports of casualties have been received so far.
The width of the dam breach exceeded 40 meters. By Thursday morning, the water level began to decrease. Work to repair the breach area continued.
In the city of Luohe in Henan Province, more than 4,500 residents of 10 villages have been evacuated amid growing concerns about a possible river overflow.
From noon Monday to noon Wednesday, the city received an average of 270.1 mm of precipitation. At the same time, the maximum amount reached 434.2 millimeters. As a result, the highest-level emergency response mode was declared.
