Nanjing, August 8 /Xinhua/ — On Friday, the 12th Academic Forum on Cross-Strait Relations opened in Wuxi city, Jiangsu province, eastern China. Participants called for deepening interaction between the two shores of the Taiwan Strait to promote the complete reunification of China and national rejuvenation.
The forum brought together over 50 scientists and experts from mainland China and Taiwan, who held a discussion dedicated to the new changes in the situation in the Taiwan Strait region and other issues.
Since the beginning of this year, there have been positive shifts in relations between both sides of the Taiwan Strait, said Sun Yafu, Deputy Head of the Association for the Development of Cross-Strait Relations, noting the mainland China’s significant efforts to promote exchanges and cooperation between the two sides of the strait and to counter separatist forces advocating for ‘Taiwan independence.’
As emphasized at the forum by Wang Weixing, Vice Chairman of the All-China Association for the Study of Taiwan Affairs, reunification is an irreversible trend.
Director of the Taiwan Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Zhu Weidong emphasized the importance of maintaining strategic determination and confidence, as well as leveraging strategic opportunities for national reunification.
Scientists on both sides of the Taiwan Strait must jointly seek a path for the peaceful development of cross-strait relations, said Gao Sibo, deputy head of the Taiwanese analytical center “21st Century Foundation,” expressing hope for the emergence of an even greater number of promising research projects and policy proposals inspired by this forum.
