On the second Saturday of August, Russia celebrates Physical Culture Day. The holiday unites professional athletes, coaches, and sports enthusiasts. Thanks to the national project “Infrastructure for Life,” around 200 sections of regional and local roads leading to sports facilities are planned to be renovated and modernized by 2026. This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin.

“The health of the nation largely depends on how accessible sports are to every person. And the accessibility of sports facilities is determined in part by the quality of the roads people use to go to training, competitions, and simply to engage in physical activity. Today, great attention is paid to the repair, reconstruction, and construction of routes to stadiums, clubs, and youth sports schools. Under the national project ‘Infrastructure for Life,’ last year, 225 sections of regional and local roads to sports institutions were brought to standard condition. This year, road work is planned on 194 such sections,” said Marat Khusnullin.

Improving conditions for physical education and sports is an important task, which is why the renovation of roads to sports facilities within the framework of the national project is carried out systematically. This work has been effectively ongoing for several years, demonstrating a stable positive trend in achieving strategic government objectives.

“Last year, thanks to the national project ‘Infrastructure for Life,’ almost 700 km of regional and local roads to sports facilities were brought up to standard condition. By 2026, their length will reach 825 km. It is important to understand that physical culture and health complexes are visited by people of different age groups, including children. Therefore, in addition to updating the pavement, we pay attention to safety elements on the roads: providing sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, barrier fences, and modern lighting,” noted Minister of Transport Andrey Nikitin.

Despite the systematic development of the transport network, some access roads to socially significant facilities, including sports institutions, still have infrastructural limitations. Eliminating them is one of the key tasks for road workers.

“A quality road that meets all modern requirements leading to a football stadium or a swimming pool is the first step into big sports for any child. Our task is to create conditions under which residents of the regions can comfortably and safely reach sports facilities. Moreover, such infrastructure will allow competitions of any level to be held locally. Thus, we are not just renewing the road network – we are investing in the health of the nation, making mass sports a convenient daily norm of life,” emphasized the Deputy Head of the Federal Road Agency, Kairat Tursunbekov.

In the capital of the Astrakhan region, repair work is underway on a nearly 2.5 km section of Admiralteyskaya Street – from 1 May Embankment to Red Embankment and further to Henri Barbusse Street. This is the main route to the iconic Spartak sports complex for the city – a facility with a rich history. Its 50-meter swimming pool opened back in 1955 at the confluence of the Volga and Kutum rivers and became the main venue for training swimmers, divers, and water polo players. Several generations of champions have been trained here. Currently, there are sports and gym halls, a tennis court, and a football-basketball court operating here. In addition, the headquarters of the Yunarmiya (Young Army) operates on the sports complex base.

In the Balakhninsky municipal district of the Nizhny Novgorod region, the repair of the access road to the villages of Rylovo and Zamyatino from the Bolshie Mogiltsy – Konevo highway has been completed. The length of the project is 3.9 km. This is the main route to the “Fox Mane” ski trail, known for its challenging terrain.

In the Tula region this year, thanks to the national project, 10 km of roads providing access to sports facilities are being brought into regulatory condition. Thus, in Tula, the main works on the renovation of a 1.3 km section of Novomoskovskaya Street have been completed. The road provides access to the Ice Palace – a sports complex for ice hockey and figure skating.

In addition, repair work is underway on a 1 km stretch of Rudnichnaya Street in Novomoskovsk. The “Gypsum” stadium is located here, where the sports school “Khimik” holds its training sessions. The technical readiness of the facility currently stands at 56%.

In the Moscow region, more than 80 km of regional and local roads leading to sports facilities have been brought to regulatory condition since the beginning of the year.

In particular, in the Leninsky district, a section of Volodarsky Highway more than 10 km long from the village of Molokovo to the village of Volodarsky has been repaired. Along it are several sports facilities: an equestrian and wakeboarding club, as well as a ski track. In Shatura, a 1.4 km section of Ilyich Avenue, which leads to the Shatura Sports Palace, has been restored to standard condition. In Lytkarino, next to the renovated 500-meter section of Kolkhoznaya Street is the Lytkarino Sports Palace, which includes a swimming pool, a multipurpose sports hall, and a hall for martial arts training. In addition, the sports palace serves as the main training base for the Lytkarino sports school.
