Beijing, August 6 /Xinhua/ — The 16-megawatt (MW) floating wind power platform on tension-leg supports (Tension-Leg Platform, TLP) “Haiyou Anlan,” independently developed and built by China, was connected to the power grid of the Lufeng oil field and began directly supplying clean electricity, the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) reported.
This platform is designed and constructed to withstand extreme conditions, including Category 17 super typhoons characterized by wind speeds of up to 220 km/h. The development and commissioning of this platform demonstrate that China’s technology in floating wind power installations for deepwater and remote marine areas has reached a world-class level, opening new prospects for the development of offshore wind energy in the country.
The wind energy platform “Haiyou Anlan” is installed in the northern part of the South China Sea at a depth of 136 meters and 136 km from the coast near the mouth of the Zhujiang River. Its total height is equivalent to a 110-story building, the swept area is 7.5 standard football fields, and the total weight reaches 7,800 tons. The platform is connected to the power grid of the Lufeng oil field through an underwater cable. After commissioning, “Haiyou Anlan” is expected to generate 54 million kWh of clean electricity per year.
Compared to semi-submersible platforms, TLPs are more stable, can exhibit a lower steel consumption rate, and occupy less area on the sea surface, according to CNOOC data.
China has abundant wind energy resources in deep-water and remote offshore areas, which is a key factor in the future growth of offshore wind power. According to CNOOC’s forecast, once the above platform is put into operation, it will save 15,000 cubic meters of fuel oil and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 35,000 tons per year. -0-
