Top news of the day at the UN and worldwide: the death of children as a result of strikes on Russia and Ukraine, acute food shortage in Afghanistan, support for humanitarian response in Venezuela, anniversary of the explosion at the Beirut port.
Death of children
In recent days, as a result of attacks on the territory of the Russian Federation and Ukraine, children have again been killed and injured. This was stated on Tuesday by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The UN agency again called on all parties to fulfill their obligations in accordance with international humanitarian law, including the protection of children and civilian infrastructure. “Attacks resulting in the death and injury of children must stop,” UNICEF emphasized.
Crisis in Afghanistan
One in three residents of Afghanistan – 14 million people – is facing acute food insecurity. This is stated in a World Food Programme statement published on Tuesday. As of today, according to the WFP, 12 provinces in Afghanistan have registered a critical level of acute child malnutrition – the highest figure ever recorded in the country. The crisis is fueled by local conflicts, mass unemployment, rising food prices, reductions in humanitarian funding, and disruptions in supply routes.
Aid to Venezuela
Humanitarian organizations continue to ramp up their efforts in Venezuela more than five weeks after the devastating earthquakes. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, through the joint work of the UN, partner agencies, local communities, and authorities, 200,000 people in the country have received aid and basic services. A needs assessment is currently being conducted to help determine the priorities for further action. At the same time, international support is critically important. The humanitarian response plan has received only 42 percent of the necessary funding.
Anniversary of the explosion in Beirut
Today marks six years since the devastating explosion at the port of Beirut. Jean Arnault, acting head of the Office of the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, expressed solidarity today with all those affected and paid tribute to their tireless pursuit of establishing the truth and holding those responsible accountable. He stated the need to redouble efforts to advance judicial proceedings and called on all parties to take the necessary steps for this. Arnault also emphasized the importance of implementing structural reforms aimed at strengthening and protecting the independence of the judiciary in Lebanon.
