Strikes on Ukraine
The acting UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Ukraine, Auke Lootsma, warned of increased threats to the civilian population of the country. According to data from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, over the past weekend, as a result of large-scale attacks on Ukrainian cities and frontline areas, civilians were killed and injured. Premises of a local humanitarian organization were also targeted. Cargo, including aid provided with the support of UN agencies, was destroyed. Despite the threats, UN agencies and their partners continue to provide assistance to affected residents of Ukraine.
Ebola outbreak in the DRC
With the support of the UN, new centers are opening in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo to combat the Ebola fever outbreak, which continues to spread rapidly. As of August 1, 3748 cases have been confirmed in five provinces of the country. As noted by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the new transit center in the displaced persons camp in Ituri province will enable faster identification of possible cases and prompt referral of patients to specialized facilities.
Attacks in Gaza
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that attacks continued throughout the Gaza Strip over the past weekend. On Saturday, one of the strikes hit the area of the Al-Aqsa hospital, damaging a nearby medical supplies warehouse. According to the World Health Organization, this resulted in the destruction of vital medical supplies, including some of the shipments delivered by WHO. The UN reminded that medical facilities must not be subjected to attacks or used for military purposes.
Prisoners in Myanmar
The UN press service noted the message from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) that its representative visited State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, who is in custody in Myanmar, today. It is noted that the visit took place in accordance with ICRC standards and procedures. The UN welcomed this step and once again called for the prompt and unconditional release of all arbitrarily detained persons in the country.
