Beijing, August 4 /Xinhua/ — The State Council of the People’s Republic of China announced on Tuesday the creation of a special group to investigate and assess the landslide incident that occurred on July 17 in the centrally administered city of Chongqing /Southwest China/.
The group is led by the Ministry of Emergency Management of the People’s Republic of China, and its members also include representatives from such agencies as the Ministry of Natural Resources of the People’s Republic of China, the China Meteorological Administration, and the People’s Government of Chongqing City.
At the group’s first plenary session, held on Tuesday, the task was set to conduct a comprehensive and objective analysis of the collapse process, determine its causes, and study the entire set of measures taken to prevent, eliminate, and resolve the consequences of the emergency.
The meeting participants demanded that the relevant agencies across the country identify and eliminate the risks of geological disasters, strengthen monitoring and early warning, and take all necessary measures to protect people’s lives and property.
As of July 30, 51 people have died as a result of the landslide, and more than 1,100 local residents have been evacuated. Ten people were reported missing.
Efforts are currently being made to assist the affected area in restoring normal life and productive activities, as well as in eliminating the consequences of the natural disaster. –0–
