From July 5 to 18, five students from SPbGASU (Faculty of Engineering Ecology and Urban Utilities, Faculty of Architecture, and Faculty of Automotive and Road Engineering) participated in the intensive summer program Summer Camp AI Masters at the Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU), located in the ancient city of Xi’an. Two weeks in the Middle Kingdom became a unique blend of advanced knowledge, cultural discoveries, and genuine student friendship for the students.
Every day, participants immersed themselves in the world of artificial intelligence: lectures and workshops by top specialists from around the world allowed our students to study the latest trends in machine learning, computer vision, and data processing. And during a tour of iFlytek—a Chinese technology giant in the field of voice technologies—the students saw firsthand how AI developments are implemented in real industry and everyday life.
But the studies were not confined to classrooms. The students fully immersed themselves in Chinese history: they visited the legendary Goose Pagoda, strolled through the ancient streets of Xi’an, and, of course, saw the Terracotta Army—the eighth wonder of the world, which left an indelible impression on everyone. Special joy came from experiencing cultural traditions: each enthusiastically tried on an elegant Chinese traditional hanfu costume, holding an impromptu photo session against the backdrop of ancient temples.
The highlight of the program was the defense of their own AI projects, on which the students worked in mixed international teams. Our students skillfully presented their developments in English, demonstrating a high level of competence. At the closing ceremony, each participant from SPbGASU received a certificate of course completion and a memorable gift from NPU — a symbol of the successful conclusion of this intense chapter.
The greatest treasure that the students brought back is invaluable international experience and dozens of new friends from countries in Asia, Europe, and America. Joint projects, evening discussions, and exchange of ideas erased language and cultural barriers, proving that science knows no borders. “We returned not only with new knowledge but also with a feeling that the world has become a little closer,” the students share.
Ahead lie new horizons, but this trip has already become an important milestone in the lives of our students and a vivid example of how international cooperation enriches professional and human experience.
