Jakarta, August 2 /Xinhua/ — Five people died and 41 others are missing as a result of a fire on the vessel Mutiara Santosa 2 in the Java Sea north of Madura Island in Indonesia’s East Java province. This was reported on Sunday by Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency.
It is noted that a total of 225 people were evacuated.
On board the vessel traveling the Surabaya-Makassar route were 271 people, including 232 passengers and 39 crew members.
Authorities stated that the vessel was located approximately 19 nautical miles /35.2 km/ from the shore and was almost completely engulfed in flames, while passengers remained on the bridge and in the bow section of the ship.
Several nearby vessels participated in the rescue operation. A joint search and rescue team deployed additional ships and specialists to evacuate survivors and search for the missing.
