Beijing, August 1 /Xinhua/ — The Navy and Air Force of the Southern Theater Command of the People’s Liberation Army of China (Southern Theater Command PLA) conducted joint exercises on Saturday in the territorial waters of the Chinese island Huangyan Island and the airspace above it, as well as in surrounding areas adjacent to the island.

The PLA Southern Theater Command stated in a declaration that these are necessary actions taken in connection with the current situation in the South China Sea /SCS/ and in response to the actions of certain countries in the region that undermine peace and stability in the area.

The purpose of these exercises is to test and enhance the combat readiness of the armed forces to protect China’s territorial sovereignty as well as its maritime rights and interests, according to a statement from the PLA Southern Theater Command.
