Moscow, August 1 /Xinhua/ — A fire broke out early Saturday morning at St. Basil’s Cathedral on Red Square in the Russian capital, Moscow. This was reported to TASS, citing emergency services.
“On the first floor in the director’s office, a fire broke out involving personal belongings and furniture. The area of the fire was about 10 square meters. About 10 fire engines were dispatched to the scene. The fire is currently contained,” the agency’s source said.
No information has been received about the victims as a result of the incident.
Saint Basil’s Cathedral was built between 1555 and 1561 by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible to commemorate the capture of Kazan and the annexation of the Kazan Khanate to the Russian state.
