UN, July 31 /Xinhua/ — The worsening security situation and increasing attacks on civilians in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are making it increasingly difficult to combat the Ebola outbreak at its epicenter — Ituri province. This was stated on Thursday by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
It is noted that violence in Ituri also exposes displaced families to greater risk.
“According to humanitarian partners’ data, at least 12 displaced children were reportedly abducted by armed individuals on July 27 near the displaced persons camp Plain-Savo in the Djugu territory. Local civil society organizations report that at least 23 displaced persons were killed in and around this camp in the first half of this year,” the UNHCR stated.
The management stated that Plein-Savo is located in the sanitary zone of Fataki, where Ebola fever cases have been confirmed, but no infections have been recorded in the camp itself. More than 76,000 displaced persons live in Plein-Savo, many of whom fled repeated violence.
Humanitarian conditions remain extremely difficult, and access to food, clean water, and other essential services is limited. Overcrowding and poor living conditions increase the risk of disease transmission, UNHCR stated. –0–
