Beijing, July 30 /Xinhua/ — According to official data published on Thursday, electricity generation by coal-fired power units accounted for 49.7 percent of the total electricity production in China in the first half of 2026, marking the first time its share dropped below 50 percent, and a new breakthrough in the country’s transition to a green and low-carbon energy system.
From January to June, the electricity generation volume by coal power plants in China amounted to 2.5 trillion kWh, the National Energy Administration (NEA) of China reported at a relevant press conference.
These figures reflect the interim results achieved by China in expanding the use of non-fossil energy sources as a replacement for traditional fossil fuels, an official of the department Xing Yiten stated at a press conference.
According to CEC data, as of the end of June, the total installed capacity in the Chinese wind and solar energy sector reached 1.95 billion kW, which is 16.8 percent more than a year earlier.
Against the backdrop of such capacity expansion, electricity production from renewable energy sources maintained steady growth in the first half of the year, reaching nearly 2 trillion kWh and increasing by about 9 percent year-on-year, data showed.
Renewable energy sources accounted for 41.2 percent of the total electricity generation across the country for the specified period, which exceeds the combined electricity consumption of the service sector as well as urban and rural households, the data from the State Energy Agency showed.
Recent data has shown accelerating rates of China’s transition to green and low-carbon energy as the country continues to expand the capacity for renewable energy while simultaneously reducing its dependence on coal.
China has promised to reach a peak in carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. -0-
