Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and the Shvabe holding of the Rostec State Corporation are creating an electronic anesthetic vaporizer “Morpheus” for anesthesia machines. This is one of the key components of the equipment, responsible for the proper delivery of anesthetic to the patient during surgery. The purpose of the device is to provide an extremely precise concentration of drug vapors during surgical interventions, which is critically important for patient safety.

According to the press service of Shvabe, a working prototype of the device will soon be sent for field testing.

“Morpheus” will become a component of the MAIA-01 inhalation anesthesia device produced by one of the enterprises of the Shvabe holding — the Ural Optical and Mechanical Plant named after E. S. Yalamov (UOMZ). The device can work with a wide range of modern anesthetics, providing their automatic delivery at a strictly specified concentration. Stability of parameters during prolonged operations is achieved by heating the mixing chamber.

The development of the “Morpheus” evaporator once again confirms the effectiveness of cooperation between industry and universities in addressing import substitution tasks. Our many years of experience collaborating with Rostec enterprises shows that The collaboration of scientists and production engineers enables the creation of new competitive products.. We intend to continue deepening our successful cooperation with the Ural Optical and Mechanical Plant, including in the area of implementing industrial postgraduate programs” — commented the rector of SPbPU Andrey Rudskoy.

The electronic vaporizer will be integrated into a unified microprocessor-based control system for the anesthesia machine, allowing for automatic maintenance of set parameters and response to any deviations. The device design takes into account the possibility of its manufacturing using 3D printing methods—this will accelerate the production and assembly of the product.

“The use of electronic vaporizers in multifunctional inhalation anesthesia devices will make them more autonomous and convenient for medical professionals. Such devices will eliminate the need for constant manual adjustment of parameters and will allow for the widespread application of advanced approaches, such as low-flow anesthesia. In the near future, the prototype of ‘Morpheus’ will be sent for clinical trials.” — noted Anatoly Sludnykh, General Director of UOMZ.
