UN, July 29 /Xinhua/ — Sun Lei, the Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the Permanent Mission of China to the UN, on Tuesday called for the resumption of negotiations to ease tensions in the Persian Gulf region.
China is deeply concerned about the latest escalation of tensions in the region, said a diplomat at the Security Council’s open debate on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue.
The memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, signed more than a month ago, is a valuable result of the good services and mediation efforts of many parties, noted Sun Lei. The document embodies the hope of the peoples of the Middle East for an end to conflict and the restoration of peace and stability. It should not be in vain to squander the hard-won achievements, he stated.
“Now that the door for negotiations is open, it should not be closed. As long as there is hope for peace, efforts should not be abandoned,” said Sun Lei. “The most urgent task is to maintain the commitment to resolving disputes through negotiations and to return to implementing the consensus reached in the memorandum of understanding,” he added.
China will continue to support the mediating efforts of Pakistan and other parties, promote the earliest resumption of dialogue and negotiations between the interested parties, the earliest restoration of normal and secure passage through the Strait of Hormuz, the improvement of relations between neighboring countries, and ensuring collective security of the Gulf states, he said.
The Red Sea is an important international trade route. According to a Chinese diplomat, all interested parties must respect the right of commercial vessels of all countries to navigate the Red Sea in accordance with international law, respect the sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity of all countries, and jointly ensure the security of international maritime routes and their uninterrupted passage.
The stakeholders must continue to properly resolve their disagreements through dialogue and consultations and avoid actions that could lead to further escalation of confrontation, Sun Lei stated.
China welcomes the easing of tensions in the relations between Lebanon and Israel. Israel must complete its withdrawal from Lebanon. China supports Syria in protecting its sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity. The Golan Heights are occupied Syrian territory, recognized by the international community, and the 1974 Disengagement Agreement must be respected, emphasized Sun Lei.
The Middle East belongs to the peoples of the Middle East. According to the diplomat, the region should not become an arena for great power rivalry or a victim of geopolitical competition.
China will cooperate with the international community to promote political solutions to acute problems in the region, support the countries of the region in their pursuit of independence, restoring mutual trust, and creating a new regional security architecture that corresponds to changing realities in order to achieve lasting peace and stability in the Middle East, Sun Lei added. –0–
