Moscow, July 28 /Xinhua/ — The potential emergence of nuclear weapons in Japan will negatively affect stability in the region, said Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, on Monday, urging Japan to return to a peaceful path of development.

“The potential implementation of a nuclear component in the already rapidly accelerating process of Japan’s remilitarization will create potentially new challenges and security threats for our country. And we are specifically talking about the Far East. This will also not contribute to regional stability overall. The consequences of such irresponsible steps will be extremely negative for Japan itself, as has already happened in the past,” she said.

The diplomat noted that the Japanese Defense Minister’s arguments about the need for an open discussion on nuclear weapons cannot be justified by self-defense interests, since, according to her, “no one from other countries threatens the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Japan. On the contrary, we see a revival of the aggressive spirit of Japanese militarism.”

“We once again call on Tokyo in this context to remember the lessons of history that they are carefully trying to forget there. We are talking about the history of World War II. And to return to the path of peaceful development,” concluded M. Zakharova. –0–
