Madrid, July 26 /Xinhua/ — Large forest fires raging in central Spain have covered an area of about 50,000 hectares, becoming the largest in the country’s recorded history. This was reported on Sunday by the Spanish news agency EFE.
As of now, the fires that have spread to various districts of the province of Avila and the neighboring autonomous community of Madrid are still not contained despite intensive firefighting efforts.
It is reported that thousands of firefighters continue to work on containing the fire with the support of the emergency unit of the Spanish armed forces, planes, and helicopters.
Due to ongoing forest fires, more than 100,000 residents of central Spain have been evacuated or instructed to stay indoors.
