The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming 2028 as the International Year of International Law, thereby reaffirming the role of the latter in maintaining peace and security, strengthening multilateral cooperation, and developing friendly relations among states.
The resolution emphasizes that respect for and adherence to international law are essential conditions for the effectiveness, predictability, and legitimacy of the modern international system. Member states, UN system organizations, and other interested parties are encouraged to carry out relevant educational, scientific, and outreach activities throughout 2028.
The resolution also encourages the peaceful settlement of disputes, the development of international legal cooperation, and the improvement of legal education. Special attention is given to involving youth, the scientific community, legal professionals, and civil society institutions in the promotion of international law.
The General Assembly welcomed Turkmenistan’s proposal to hold the Global Forum on International Law in December 2028, which will be the central event of the International Year and bring together member states, United Nations system entities, international organizations, the scientific community, and civil society.
The proclamation of the International Year builds on the longstanding activities of the United Nations in the development of teaching and studying international law, including the implementation of the UN Programme of Assistance in the field of international law and the work of the International Law Commission.
