Enterprises of the Samara group of Rosneft have organized a traveling photo exhibition “White-tailed Eagle – the Winged Symbol of Samara Bend.” The exhibition is designed to draw attention to an initiative aimed at preserving the population of a rare predator listed in the Red Book of Russia and the International Red Book. The joint project of the Company and the Samarskaya Luka National Park has been implemented for three years.
The exhibition opening took place on the territory of the national park; the display includes 16 photo canvases and tells about the family life of birds. The masterful photographs are combined with interesting facts about the lives of feathered predators. White-tailed sea eagles are known for their loyalty: once paired, they stay together for life. The feathered partners often return to the same nest, continuously adding to and strengthening it. Over time, such an ancestral nest can reach two meters in diameter and is used by subsequent generations of birds.
The exhibition reflects the results of systematic scientific research conducted by the ornithologists of the Samarskaya Luka National Park, thanks to the support of oil companies. Specialists annually update the population size, identify new nesting sites, monitor chick growth, and analyze the food base. In 2026, ornithologists recorded 10 nesting sites where, according to scientists’ estimates, up to 20 chicks are growing. Young birds take flight and leave the nest 2.5–3 months after birth. About one and a half months after their first flight, the chicks stay close to their parents, who continue to feed them while the young eagles learn to hunt on their own. Thus, the National Park has become a donor for neighboring regions where the adult birds later disperse.
A key task in the development of the project at this stage has become extensive educational work. Its goal is to draw everyone’s attention to the fact that caring for nature begins with personal responsibility. Previously, within the framework of the grant, a thematic album was released to help form the ecological culture of the younger generation.
During the exhibition presentation, an interactive educational program was organized for children. The themed lecture focused on rare animal species of the Samara region. For the young guests, a quiz titled “Encyclopedia of the Native Land” was also conducted, covering the traditions, history, and nature of the region. The children also participated in a quest, where photo stand materials helped them find the correct answers to the questions. In a creative workshop, the children made figurines of a rare bird and learned about the distinctive coloration of the white-tailed eagle’s plumage.
The traveling exhibition will undertake an educational tour across the Samara region, visiting 11 venues in Tolyatti, Zhigulevsk, Novokuybyshevsk, Samara, and Syzran. More than 5,000 students from schools and universities in the region, along with thousands of visitors to the national park, will have the opportunity to learn interesting facts about the lifestyle of one of the largest birds of the Volga region and receive information about projects aimed at preserving its population.
Environmental education of the younger generation is an important part of Rosneft’s corporate culture and a key area of activity for the Company’s volunteers. Alongside large-scale production projects and comprehensive biodiversity conservation programs, oil workers support scientific research and programs for the care of rare animals, organize educational events, ecological festivals, workshops, quizzes, and eco-lessons.
