International Medical Seminar in Tianjin: Russian Doctors Evaluate China’s Achievements in CAR-T and Gene Therapy

Tianjin, July 24 /Xinhua/ — “Currently, China is one of the world leaders in the field of cell and gene therapy. The level of medicine is very high, and it is evident that a tremendous amount of effort has been invested in the development of modern technologies,” shared Renat Badaev, a hematologist at the Moscow Clinical Scientific Research Center Hospital No. 52, with a Xinhua correspondent after visiting Tianjin Haihe Hospital.

From the last decade of June to the second decade of July, by invitation of the Chinese charitable organization Tianjin Evgenia Foundation, 22 hematologists and research associates from 8 countries, including Russia, Italy, Egypt, the United Kingdom, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brazil, gathered in the northern Chinese city of Tianjin to participate in a medical seminar.

“It was my first trip to China. However, what I saw made a very strong impression on me,” said R. Badaev, adding that the trip helped him better understand how quickly medicine is developing in China, as well as introduced him to a large number of modern technologies and ideas.

According to him, CAR-T therapy and gene therapy are still at an early stage of development in Russia, but many medical centers are already gaining the capability to conduct CAR-T therapy. “The experience of our Chinese colleagues, especially in the field of CAR-T therapy, gene therapy, patient selection, and long-term observation, will help us improve clinical practice,” he stated.

According to R. Badaev, the results of new research presented by Chinese specialists are of great interest and may contribute to improving treatment outcomes for Russian patients.

“I was particularly impressed by the results of CAR-T therapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. There was also great interest in the advances in gene therapy not only for hematological but also many other diseases. The presented clinical results show that these technologies have already become an important part of modern medicine,” emphasized R. Badaev.

During the 19-day seminar, participants not only systematically studied advanced technologies such as CAR-T therapy, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and gene therapy, but also visited clinical centers, research laboratories, and CAR-T production centers, where they personally interacted with Chinese experts.

“The most important part of this seminar was the opportunity to see the connection between theory and practice. The opportunity to observe the work of clinical centers and laboratories gave me a unique understanding of modern treatment methods,” noted Anastasia Zhernyakova, hematologist, senior research fellow at the Research Department of Hematology and Transfusiology of the Russian Scientific Research Institute of Hematology and Transfusiology.

In her opinion, China’s medical experience is quite significant, which is due to the large volume of transplants carried out in the country, the substantial amount of drugs produced for CAR-T therapy, as well as the high number of patients receiving such therapy.

“I believe that in this field the most important and significant was the experience of Chinese colleagues, based on CAR-T therapy, regarding complications, infections, problems, as well as some aspects of organizational issues,” emphasized the Russian hematologist.

“Moreover, it is very important to see some possible differences between methodologies in my country and China, as well as, for example, in different European and African countries, because we have participants from different continents, and we share our opinions, we share our experiences,” she added.

“We are very interested in this cooperation with the Chinese side and in all kinds of cooperation: clinical, educational, and scientific,” assured A. Zhernjakova, adding that this kind of cooperation would be very promising for all countries. -0-
