Rio de Janeiro, July 24 /Xinhua/ — On Thursday, Brazil rejected the US decision to impose a 12.5 percent duty on Brazilian products as part of a trade investigation involving 60 countries, stating that it will seek to resolve the dispute within the WTO framework.
Calling the investigation under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 “arbitrary and unjustified,” the Brazilian government stated that the United States used the issue of forced labor as a pretext for protectionist trade policy and “chose to manipulate an issue of great importance for human rights and the workers’ struggle worldwide,” despite Brazil having provided documents and explanations of its legislation and enforcement mechanisms during the investigation.
Brazil announced that it will immediately initiate procedures for applying countermeasures in accordance with the national law on reciprocity and will refer the case to the WTO dispute settlement mechanism.
Tariffs imposed by the US on dozens of markets over accusations of lax enforcement of forced labor bans will take effect on Friday. –0–
