Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University congratulates on the Day of the Russian Navy. In 2026, the holiday falls on July 26 and will be special: it will mark exactly 330 years since Peter I signed the decree on the creation of the regular fleet.
For our country, this day is a symbol of valor and glory. The creation of the regular Russian Navy, initiated by Peter the Great, forever changed the course of national history, securing for us the status of a great maritime power. For more than three centuries, the Navy has been a reliable shield of our borders, embodying the indomitable spirit and professionalism of its defenders. We take pride in the glorious victories of Russian fleet commanders, the courage of sailors, and the outstanding achievements of shipbuilders whose names are forever inscribed in the history of Russia.
For the Polytechnic University, this holiday is not just a day on the calendar. It is part of our shared history. Our university bears the name of the founder of the fleet, and from its earliest years, engineers for the shipbuilding industry have been trained here. As early as 1902, the shipbuilding department began operating at the Polytechnic, headed by the talented engineer Konstantin Petrovich Boklevsky. Its graduates and faculty — Alexey Nikolaevich Krylov, Ivan Grigoryevich Bubnov, Boris Mikhailovich Malinin, and many others — were legends of domestic shipbuilding. It was the polytechnic engineers who designed the first military submarines in Russia, the most powerful Arctic icebreakers of their time, the high-speed cruiser “Kirov,” and the battleship “Soviet Union.”
In 1930, the shipbuilding faculty of the Polytechnic Institute was transformed into the Leningrad Shipbuilding Institute (now the Saint Petersburg State Marine Technical University). But our common roots are inseparable. Today, the Polytechnic University continues to honorably carry this heritage. The university participates in the International Naval Salon, develops innovative projects in the field of marine robotics and underwater vehicle construction, and trains engineering personnel for the shipbuilding industry.
A special place is held by the friendship between the Polytechnic team and the crew of the heavy nuclear missile cruiser “Pyotr Velikiy” — the flagship of the Northern Fleet. The cruiser’s sailors are frequent and valued guests at the Polytechnic, and our scientists and students always share their ideas and developments with them.
Also this year, representatives of the Polytechnic visited the heavy nuclear missile cruiser Admiral Nakhimov of the Ushakov Order, 43rd Division of missile ships of the Northern Fleet. The visit took place at the invitation of the command and crew of the ship and continued the long-standing cooperation between SPbPU and the ships of the Northern Fleet.
