Main news of the day at the UN and worldwide: the UN calls on states to make more active use of diplomatic tools, fragile progress has been recorded in food security in Gaza, the Secretary-General is heading on a visit to Syria, and the representative of Algeria has been elected chair of the Economic and Social Council.
Conflict resolution
Speaking at the UN Security Council meeting dedicated to the peaceful resolution of disputes, the Secretary-General warned about the rapid increase in conflicts and called on states to more actively use the tools provided by the UN Charter. António Guterres emphasized that the mechanisms of diplomacy were created precisely for crisis periods—such as those the world is experiencing today. The Secretary-General paid significant attention to the crisis in the Middle East, calling it a threat to global stability. He stressed that attacks on civilian infrastructure are unacceptable and that there is no military solution to the conflict.
Situation in Gaza
A new analysis published by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), UNICEF, and the World Food Programme (WFP) shows early signs of improvement in food security indicators in Gaza. However, the UN warns that progress remains extremely fragile and fully depends on sustained access to humanitarian aid and the restoration of commercial supplies. According to the analysis, the number of people in Gaza experiencing severe food shortages has decreased from 1.6 million to 1.4 million. Progress has also been recorded in child nutrition indicators.
The Secretary-General’s visit to Syria
The UN Secretary-General is flying to Jordan’s capital Amman on Thursday, from where he will proceed to Syria. On Saturday, António Guterres is expected to meet with the Syrian leadership in Damascus. The UN emphasizes the importance of this visit. According to the Organization’s spokesperson, Syria is presented with an opportunity not only to overcome the consequences of the conflict but also to lay the foundations for a more stable, inclusive, and prosperous future. The United Nations is ready to support the Syrian people on this path.
Chairperson of ECOSOC
Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Amar Benjamaa, was elected on Thursday as the new chairman of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Speaking after his election, the diplomat named three priorities: ensuring inclusivity, accelerating progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and strengthening trust in multilateral cooperation. ECOSOC is the UN’s central platform for coordinating international policy in economic, social, and environmental fields, as well as for assessing progress in achieving the SDGs.
