A series of sports events for veterans of the special military operation (SMO) took place in Moscow, organized by the Unified Support Center for SMO Participants and Their Families. Guests enjoyed a bowling tournament, clay shooting competitions, and kart racing. All these activities are part of the city’s social adaptation program for SMO fighters who have completed their service. It is being developed taking into account the interests and requests of the veterans themselves.
“Sport is an opportunity to feel confident in your abilities again, set new goals for yourself, and see your own progress. At the Unified Support Center, we create conditions so that every veteran can find a suitable direction that can become a favorite activity, a good outlet, or a push towards new achievements, whether it is sports or creativity,” noted Daria Starovoitova, director of the Unified Support Center for participants in the special military operation and their family members.
The event calendar of the Unified Support Center is regularly supplemented with new types of activities. They take place both at the center and at partner venues. In addition to regular training sessions, veterans can participate in team tournaments, family sports celebrations, creative gatherings, and leisure events.
Rifle shooting
The clay pigeon shooting competition was held under the guidance of professionals. First, a mandatory safety briefing was conducted. Then the participants studied the rules for handling a hunting rifle, practiced stance, aiming, and target tracking techniques. After that, each performed a series of 25 shots at moving clay targets of various sizes. They were launched along different trajectories — from relatively simple to the most complex type called “hare” (the targets bounced on the ground).
One of the participants in the tournament was a veteran of the special military operation, Alexander. He took fourth place, losing to the bronze medalist by just one accurate hit, and received the audience choice award.
“Trap shooting became a new experience for me: each tournament provides an opportunity to test myself, feel the support of those around me, and realize that I am capable of more than it seems,” Alexander shared.
Karting
Another direction of the sports program was karting. Before the races, the veterans underwent a briefing and a training session, after which amateur competitions for the best lap time were held. Inclusive hand-controlled kart models were prepared for SVO fighters with disabilities. One of the race participants was veteran Ignat. At the Unified Support Center, he regularly attends sports activities and participates in bench press tournaments.
“I’ve been driving for many years, but the last time I was at the karting track was a couple of decades ago. The emotions are overwhelming! Of course, maneuvering is not easy, but unquestionably interesting. Besides, there are people nearby who understand you without unnecessary words, and that gives you confidence. Such tournaments help you feel the zest for life, awaken a sporting spirit, and the desire to move forward,” Ignat said.
Bowling
The bowling tournament was held in a family format. Players were divided into teams but supported each other while competing for the best overall score. Winners were determined by the total points scored.
