Manila, July 21 /Xinhua/ — The South China Sea (SCS) is a common home for the countries of the region, and issues related to the SCS should not become obstacles in the relations between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). This was stated on Tuesday in Manila by China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
Wan Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the corresponding statement during a meeting with ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn.
Wan Yi noted that certain forces within the army and maritime law enforcement agencies of the Philippines deliberately provoke incidents in the South China Sea in the interests of external forces, undermining the process of improving China-Philippines relations as well as peace and stability in the SCS.
The head of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the countries of the region must maintain heightened vigilance regarding such actions.
According to Wang Yi, China is ready to work together with ASEAN to eliminate disruptive factors, accelerate consultations on the Code of Conduct in the South China Sea, jointly shape a new agenda of peace, stability, cooperation, and friendship in the South China Sea, firmly keeping the initiative in resolving South China Sea issues in the hands of regional countries. –0–
