Sergei Rachmaninoff’s “All-Night Vigil” — one of the landmark works of Russian sacred music — will be performed in the Zaryadye Concert Hall. It will be presented by the State Academic Symphony Capella of Russia conducted by Valery Polyansky.
The composer created the piece in 1915. Despite using canonical liturgical texts, it was originally intended for secular concert performance.
Unlike liturgical practice, where individual chants are part of the church rite and are separated by readings, litanies, and sacraments, in Sergei Rachmaninoff’s work they form an independent artistic cycle with a unified dramaturgy.
The composer himself considered the work as a continuation of the traditions of Russian spiritual music, established in the works of Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Sergei Taneyev, Alexander Kastalsky, and Alexander Grechaninov.
