Faculty members of the Higher School of Cyber-Physical Systems Management at SPbPU visited Lanzhou Jiaotong University (LZJTU) — one of the oldest specialized universities in China. The visit continued the cooperation that has been developing since the signing of the agreement between SPbPU and LZJTU in January 2021. During this time, the universities progressed from academic exchanges and individual scientific contacts to joint research in intelligent transportation systems and the involvement of polytechnic members in a major scientific and educational project in Gansu Province.
Chinese partners invited SPbPU staff as experts to participate in a project dedicated to intelligent management of the railway infrastructure condition. From Polytech, associate professors of the Higher School of Cyber-Physical Systems Management Vyacheslav Potekhin, German Osadchiy, and Vyacheslav Salnikov participated in the project. The invitation was a recognition of SPbPU’s expertise in cyber-physical systems, intelligent management, data analysis, and modeling of complex technical objects.
The project focuses on the deep integration of artificial intelligence and engineering technologies for railway industry tasks. Researchers from SPbPU and LZJTU conduct fundamental theoretical and technical studies related to building an intelligent network for managing the state of railway infrastructure, monitoring and forecasting its condition under complex conditions, as well as modeling and assessing factors impacting the environment. The practical significance of such work lies in improving infrastructure reliability, early risk detection, maintenance optimization, and enhancing traffic safety.
As a result of joint research, several articles co-authored with Chinese colleagues have been published in international scientific journals. In Applied Sciences, the article “MDFT-GAN: A Multi-Domain Feature Transformer GAN for Bearing Fault Diagnosis Under Limited and Imbalanced Data Conditions” was published, dedicated to bearing fault diagnosis under limited and imbalanced data. In Applied Intelligence, the work “The improved mountain gazelle optimizer for spatiotemporal support vector regression: a novel method for railway subgrade settlement prediction integrating multi-source information” was published, related to predicting the settlement of railway subgrade. Another publication, “Robust Bearing Fault Diagnosis via Bio-Inspired Spectral Enhancement and Multi-Modal Contrastive Graph Attention,” appeared in the IEEE Sensors Journal and is devoted to robust bearing fault diagnosis in complex industrial conditions.
“For Polytech, participating in the Gansu province project is recognition of our scientific expertise in intelligent management of complex technical systems. Railway infrastructure is becoming digital, and its development requires new models of data analysis, risk forecasting, and decision-making under uncertainty. Together with colleagues from LZJTU, we are working on tools that may be in demand to improve the safety and efficiency of transportation systems.” — noted Vyacheslav Potekhin.
During the visit, SPbPU lecturers gave open lectures for LZJTU master’s and doctoral students. The topics of the presentations were related to the integrated process of equipment monitoring and predictive maintenance, the implementation of a barrier function in monitoring systems to enhance train movement safety, and algorithms for designing barcodes and digital image processing in leveling systems for distance measurement. The lectures continued the scientific dialogue between the School of Automation and Electrical Engineering at LZJTU and the Higher School of Cyber-Physical Systems Management at SPbPU.
The parties paid special attention to preparing a new joint grant application on the topic “Optimization of train movement profiles through the study of the digital dynamic infrastructure platform.” The project participants are planned to include postgraduate students from SPbPU from China, as well as representatives of LZJTU. This format is especially important for Polytech: Chinese postgraduate students not only participate in the educational process but also serve as a link between the research groups of the two universities.
One example of such interaction is the work of a postgraduate student at the Graduate School of Cyber-Physical Systems Management of SPbPU specializing in “Automation and Control of Technological Processes and Productions” who is simultaneously a postgraduate student at LZJTU, Gu Chenxi. Within the framework of the joint postgraduate program, he is engaged in a topic common to both universities: “Development of classification and fault prediction algorithms based on neural network models.” The participation of Chinese postgraduate students in joint research between SPbPU and LZJTU strengthens the applied nature of the cooperation: young researchers work on tasks at the intersection of artificial intelligence, intelligent diagnostics, and transport infrastructure.

They have a good understanding of the scientific schools of both countries, participate in research, help build professional communication, and often become conduits for new joint initiatives. The visit of SPbPU faculty to LZJTU showed that the cooperation between the two universities is reaching a new level. Over five years, the partnership has developed into comprehensive scientific and educational work: participation in a Gansu province grant, joint research, publications, lectures for young scientists, preparation of a new application, and the involvement of Chinese postgraduate students from Polytech in joint scientific activities. For SPbPU, this is yet another example of how international cooperation is built around strong engineering expertise and delivers practical results for high-tech industries.
