On the night before Sunday, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation reportedly carried out another massive strike on Kyiv. As a result of the attack, at least one person was killed, over ten were injured. Residential houses, shops, and a metro station were damaged. Against this backdrop, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Ukraine, Matthias Schmale, stated that the growing number of civilian casualties across the country “raises deep concern.”
According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the night strike on Kyiv was preceded by an attack on the Odesa region the previous day. As a result of the strike on the territory of a recreation center, several civilians, including children, were killed and wounded.
“The increasing number of casualties among civilians across the country, including in large cities located far from the front line, causes deep concern,” emphasized Schmale.
He reminded that international humanitarian law prohibits attacks on civilians and civilian objects. “The civilian population, residential houses, and vital humanitarian aid must never become targets of attacks,” stated the humanitarian coordinator. The United Nations once again called for adherence to international humanitarian law, ensuring the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, and preventing attacks on facilities related to people’s livelihoods and necessary for providing humanitarian aid.
