Shanghai, July 19 /Xinhua/ — Cambodian airline Air Cambodia has signed an agreement with the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China /COMAC/ to purchase 20 regional passenger aircraft C909, COMAC reported.
According to the report, the agreement signed in Shanghai makes Air Cambodia the first foreign airline to place a bulk order for China-made C909 aircraft.
The delivery of the first batch of aircraft is scheduled for the second half of 2026, after which the planes will be put into operation.
Industry insiders stated that the new model aircraft are expected to help Air Cambodia expand its route network, increase air transport capacity, and strengthen connectivity between Cambodia and regional markets.
Additionally, COMAC has also signed a memorandum of understanding on strategic cooperation with the Civil Aviation Secretariat of Cambodia to deepen collaboration in aviation safety, airworthiness certification, and specialist training.
Formerly known as ARJ21, the C909 aircraft is a turbofan regional airliner developed independently by China, designed for 78-97 seats and having a flight range from 2,225 km to 3,700 km. It is intended for operation at airports with short and narrow runways, while this model features characteristics such as operation in high air temperatures, high altitudes, and crosswinds.
The operational geography of the C909 expanded abroad after the first flight of this model’s aircraft in Indonesia in April 2023. Currently, the C909 has already joined the fleets of Laos and Vietnam, serving 28 foreign cities and carrying over 1 million passengers.
This aircraft accounts for about 70 percent of the regional airliners fleet for domestic flights in China. Currently, China has the largest number of air travelers in the world.
Data from the Civil Aviation Administration of China showed that over the past two years, passenger traffic in the country’s air transport increased by about 40 million passenger trips annually, resulting in a total passenger volume in China’s civil aviation sector reaching 470 million passenger trips, which is 160 million passenger trips more than in 2019. -0-
