Top news of the day at the UN and worldwide: a humanitarian aid warehouse in Dnipro was hit four times by drones, the conflict in the Middle East must be resolved diplomatically, dozens died during unrest in the Pakistan-controlled Kashmir area, and Saturday marks International Nelson Mandela Day.
Strikes on a runway warehouse in Dnipro
The World Food Programme (WFP) reported that the humanitarian aid warehouse in Dnipro was struck by drones four times in the past day. None of the WFP staff were injured. However, this is the seventh incident in the past three months in which clearly marked WFP sites in Ukraine have been damaged. Over the past two years, the UN agency has recorded more than 90 instances where the organization’s property and that of its humanitarian partners in the country have been damaged as a result of hostilities. The WFP reminded that international law prohibits attacks on civilian and humanitarian infrastructure.
The situation in the Middle East
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has once again expressed concern over the ongoing military escalation between Iran and the United States. There is particular alarm over attacks on civilian infrastructure in Iran and other countries in the region. Such attacks are unacceptable, the UN emphasizes. The Secretary-General is convinced that this conflict has no military solution. He has called for intensified diplomatic efforts to achieve a long-term settlement, which must include the full restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and its adjacent waters.
Riots in Kashmir
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has called for restraint in the Pakistan-controlled Kashmir zone amid unrest ahead of regional elections. Reports indicate that dozens of people have died since June, mostly protesters as well as law enforcement officers. Authorities have banned the activities of the “Joint Action Committee,” accusing the movement of creating threats to public order and security. UN Human Rights Office spokesperson Jeremy Laurence stated that the authorities’ actions raise concerns regarding the observance of fundamental freedoms.
Nelson Mandela Day
On Saturday, the United Nations and the world will observe International Nelson Mandela Day. In his message for this occasion, the UN Secretary-General notes that in a world where inequality is becoming increasingly entrenched, everyone must take responsibility for the future and continue to realize the vision of the South African freedom and equality fighter. On Monday, the UN General Assembly will hold an informal plenary session to mark the International Day.
