Which educational programs are suitable depending on the selected Unified State Exam subjects and what qualities of applicants do they reveal?
We prepared an article about nine subjects and selected career development options for those who took these exams. For each subject, we discuss the strong qualities it reflects and describe the GUU programs for which it is required and where it will become a profile subject.
Social Studies
This subject is more often chosen by those interested in people and how everything works between them: why some ideas catch on with everyone and others don’t, how decisions are made, what drives society, politics, money, brands. If you sometimes wonder “why did it happen this way?” – it’s most likely your field.
Which programs are suitable
The range here is wide – social studies includes a whole family of very different fields. The point is not to choose the “most prestigious” one, but to understand what exactly inspires you.
- Society as a whole is interesting – how large groups of people behave, where trends come from, and why? This is about sociology. The GUU has an educational program called “Management Sociology.” A sociologist studies how large groups of people think and act, and turns this into data that companies and the government rely on.
- Are you interested in how and why people choose and buy something? This is about marketing – for example, the program “Marketing.” A marketer understands what a person needs before they themselves realize it and helps the product reach its buyer.
- Do you know and love building relationships, explaining, and negotiating? This is about PR – public relations, the GUU program “Advertising and Public Relations in Business.” A PR specialist manages what people think about a company or person and turns relationships into reputation.
- Are you interested in the people themselves at work – how to find them, motivate them, and develop them within a team? This is about personnel management. An HR specialist helps the company gather the right people and make them want to work there.
- Drawn to justice, rules, to understanding “how it should be by law”? This is about jurisprudence. GUU has an educational program “Law and Management.” A lawyer understands the rules by which people and companies live and protects the interests of those who turn to him.
- Interested in how power is structured and how entire cities and countries are governed? This is about political science and public administration. A civil servant and a political scientist work with how decisions are made that affect the lives of thousands of people.
- Do you like gathering people around you, inventing events, leading others? This is about organizing work with youth. A youth policy specialist creates projects and events around which people unite.
You don’t have to choose right now. Social studies is great because it opens many doors at once – and you’ll understand which one is yours by which of the paragraphs above you finished reading thinking, “oh, this one is about me.”
Mathematics (advanced level)
Those who are drawn to specialized mathematics are the ones who like when a problem has a precise answer, rather than “it depends on how you look at it.”
If you enjoy the moment when everything comes together, love to look for patterns, and aren’t afraid of numbers – that’s your strength.
Which programs are suitable
Mathematics itself is rarely an end goal; more often it is a tool that opens doors to a wide variety of fields.
- It’s interesting how money works — where profit comes from, why some companies grow and others don’t. This is about economics. At GSOM there are eight educational programs in economics. An economist understands how financial flows are organized and helps make decisions backed by large sums.
- Do you enjoy bringing order to chaotic data and finding things in the numbers that aren’t visible to the eye? That’s what statistics and business analytics are about. An analyst turns mountains of data into clear insights that the whole team relies on.
- Do you feel like managing — projects, processes, people, resources? This is about management. At GUU, they train managers of various profiles, from brand managers to international managers. A manager assembles different parts into a working whole and is responsible for ensuring everything reaches the result.
- Is it interesting to be at the intersection of business and technology – to understand both code and money? This is about business informatics. A business analyst translates from the language of business to the language of IT and back, so that technologies actually solve problems.
Mathematics is the most universal of subjects: almost any field that involves numbers and logic will become easier for you than for others.
Computer Science
This subject is chosen by those who love understanding how everything works inside and feel that much around can be made smarter and faster. If you enjoy assembling something functional from separate pieces and are annoyed by mindless routine that “could be automated” – you will find it interesting.
Which programs are suitable
- Do you want to create systems and applications yourself, rather than just use them? This is what applied informatics is about. A developer and systems analyst design programs and services that thousands of people then use.
- Is it interesting to work with data – to find meaning in it and predict what will happen next? This is about statistics and data management. A data specialist finds patterns through which companies understand their customers and the market.
- Do you want to be the one who connects technology with business? This is what business informatics is about. A business analyst understands how both business and IT work and makes sure that technology brings real value to the company.
- Do you feel drawn to invent and launch something new – products that do not yet exist? That’s what innovatics is about. At the State University of Management, there is an entire field of innovatics. An innovation specialist transforms a fresh idea into a real product and brings it to market.
Foreign language
A foreign language appeals to those who feel confined within one country and one culture. If you watch how people live in other places, easily find common ground with new people, and envision yourself working on an international scale – this is about you.
Which programs are suitable
Language itself is not a profession, but a powerful enhancement to any of them.
- Interested in how business and money work on a global scale? This is about economics – the program “World Economy.” An international economist works where companies and markets from different countries intersect.
- Do you like the hospitality industry – welcoming people, creating impressions, high-level service? This is about hotel management. A hotel and restaurant business manager is responsible for ensuring that the guest leaves wanting to return.
- Drawn to promotion and communications – but targeting an international audience? This is about advertising and public relations, the “Digital Marketing Communications” program. A digital communications specialist promotes a brand online, including to audiences from different countries.
- Do you want to manage – but in an environment where teams, partners, and markets from different countries converge? This is about international management. An international manager leads projects and teams where it is necessary to negotiate across language and cultural boundaries.
History
History is made by those who understand that nothing happens out of nowhere and who love to dig into the reasons. If, looking at what is happening around, you catch the thought “this is not the first time,” and you enjoy connecting facts into an overall picture – study programs that will help you reveal your qualities.
Which programs are suitable
- It’s interesting how society changes over time and why? This is about sociology – the program “Sociology of Management and Communication.” A sociologist studies how and why the behavior of large groups of people changes.
- Drawn to law, to how laws have been developed and how they protect people? This is about jurisprudence. A lawyer works with the rules by which people and the state live.
- Power and politics are interesting – how are big decisions made? This is about political science. A political scientist understands how power is structured and where it is headed.
- Do you like telling stories in a way that people follow them – about brands, companies, people? This is about advertising and public relations, the “New Business Promotion” program. A communications specialist knows how to turn a story into something memorable and believable.
- Are you drawn to the atmosphere, impressions, hospitality – places you want to return to? This is about the hotel business. A hotel and restaurant business manager creates the impression for which the guest chooses exactly this place.
Biology
This topic is for those interested in a person not only as an organism but also as an individual: why they feel, react, and act the way they do. If you want to understand people more deeply than just at the level of “what happened,” this is a valuable quality.
Which programs are suitable
Do you want to understand what drives a person and help people understand themselves? This is about psychology – specifically about management psychology in an organization. A psychologist in a company helps people and teams work more effectively and feel better, and helps managers understand their employees.
Psychology is a field where interest in people meets practical benefits for business: such specialists are needed wherever people work, and people work almost everywhere.
Geography
Geography is chosen by those who look at the world broadly – not at a single thing, but at how everything is connected: people, resources, nature, territories. If you care about what happens to the planet, but want not slogans, but a real understanding of how everything works – this is for you.
Which programs are suitable
Do you want to truly engage in ecology – to understand where the problem is and how to solve it? This is about ecology and nature management, the program “Sustainable Nature Management and Ecology.” An ecologist assesses how human activities affect nature and finds ways to develop without destroying the surrounding environment.
This trend is becoming increasingly noticeable: companies and states are taking environmental issues more seriously, and there is a shortage of specialists who understand this.
Literature
Literature is chosen by those who feel the word – who notice when a text resonates, and when it feels false, and who themselves can explain it in a way that makes you want to listen. If you grasp that a well-chosen phrase works stronger than any argument, this is a rare and sought-after skill.
Which programs are suitable
- Do you want to create things that persuade and sell – texts, campaigns, brand images? This is about advertising and public relations, including the “Advertising and Digital Design” program. An advertising specialist packages the meaning so that it reaches the right people and is remembered.
- Like to lead, create events, work with communities? This is about organizing work with youth. A youth policy specialist creates projects and events around which people unite.
Physics
Physics attracts those who are not satisfied with just knowing that something works – they want to understand why, and to make it better. If you are fascinated by how technologies work, and you have the desire to create new things rather than just use ready-made ones, that is an engineering mindset, and it is highly valued.
