Rector of Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University Andrey Rudskoy and General Director of the All-Russian Scientific Research Geological Institute named after A. P. Karpinsky Pavel Khimchenko signed a bilateral cooperation agreement.
The Karpinsky Institute is Russia’s leading organization in the field of regional geological exploration of mineral resources, and the successor to the Geological Committee established in 1882. The institute possesses a unique laboratory complex and competencies covering the full cycle of geological work: from fundamental research to digital modeling and personnel training.
The cooperation agreement between the two organizations provides for the pooling of efforts in educational and scientific research activities. The parties agreed on the joint organization of conferences, exhibitions, symposia, and round tables, as well as the preparation of joint scientific and educational-methodological publications. Special attention was paid to academic exchange of specialists, delivering lectures, and implementing advanced training programs. In the scientific field, the partners intend to develop research projects, including those with international participation, establish joint dissertation councils, and participate in the training of highly qualified personnel.
I am confident that thanks to such a unification of efforts and resources between Polytech and Russia’s leading organization in the field of geological study of the subsoil, the Karpinsky Institute, we will successfully continue the traditions of domestic science, when our specialists actively worked on all continents, making a significant contribution to world-class research and the development of the higher education system, — emphasized Andrey Rudskoy.
During the negotiations, the Director General of the Karpinsky Institute, Pavel Khimchenko, presented the key areas of the organization’s activities. He noted that the institute has the only operational isotope center in Russia equipped with a secondary ion mass spectrometer, whose precision reaches ten-thousandths, allowing the institute to rank among the top three global leaders. He also spoke about large-scale international projects, including the organization’s first-ever ten-year contract to study the Arabian Shield in Saudi Arabia. He specifically highlighted educational initiatives: the institute is the developer and methodologist of the program “Maintaining the Russian School of Natural Science,” which includes four projects: Karpinsky Class, Sambo in Granite, “Time of Geology,” and Inclusive Geology.
Pavel Khimchenko thanked the rector of SPbPU for the reception and noted: Polytechnic is an unconditional leader for us, and we truly appreciate the opportunity to cooperate with you as an anchor partner. Until now, we have not had such a strong educational ally, and now we are counting on the unification of our scientific schools and educational programs to implement ambitious projects.
In addition, an agreement was signed on the accession of the Karpinsky Institute to the consortium “Russian-African Network University” (RAFU) and a roadmap for cooperation within the framework of the consortium’s activities.
According to the roadmap of joint activities for 2026, the Karpinsky Institute is scheduled to participate in the programs of the RAU Summer Multidisciplinary University, implemented by the Polytechnic for citizens of Mali, Morocco, and South Africa. The partners plan to take part in the international conference Creating a resilient future in Pretoria (South Africa), organized by the Association of Universities of South Africa with the support of the South African Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation. There will also be an RAU conference in Moscow at the RUDN venue, dedicated to the contribution of universities of Russia and Africa to sustainable regional development, where the Russian language is considered the basis of educational dialogue. Joint participation is planned in the opening of the RAU Information Center in Tunisia, an educational exhibition, and holding “RAU Days” at the largest universities in that country.
The concluded agreement and joining the RAFU consortium will become an important step in strengthening the scientific and educational cooperation between Russia and the countries of the African continent.
