Brussels, July 14 /Xinhua/ — The European Union, the United Kingdom, and Spain signed an agreement in Brussels on Tuesday regarding the future status of Gibraltar, abolishing regular checks at the land border between Gibraltar and Spain.
The document was signed by the European Commissioner for Trade Policy and Economic Security Maroš Šefčovič, the UK’s Minister of State for Europe Stephen Doughty, the Chief Minister of Gibraltar Fabian Picardo, and the Foreign Minister of Spain José Manuel Albares.
The agreement provides for the abolition of regular border controls between Gibraltar and Spain, as well as further rapprochement of Gibraltar with the European Union through harmonization with Schengen Area norms and EU customs procedures.
According to the document, the agreement will significantly facilitate the movement of goods and workers between Gibraltar and Spain, contributing to the strengthening of economic ties between Gibraltar and the European Union.
The question of Gibraltar’s status has been discussed between the EU and the United Kingdom since the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union in 2020.
