Washington, July 14 /Xinhua/ — U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday stated that the United States intends to replace the toll charges on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz with investment agreements with the Persian Gulf countries.
“Following very productive negotiations with the leadership of Middle Eastern countries, I have decided to replace the 20 percent compensation fee in favor of the United States with trade and investment agreements that various Persian Gulf states will conclude with the USA,” wrote D. Trump on the social network Truth Social.
According to the American president, the Strait of Hormuz will remain open for navigation by all countries except Iran, while the naval blockade will continue.
“Undoubtedly, the Strait of Hormuz is open to the passage of all vessels except Iranian ones,” said D. Trump. “Thus, there will be a complete blockade, but only with regard to ships going to and from Iranian ports, as well as carrying any cargos related to Iran,” he added.
The decision was made a day after D. Trump proposed imposing a 20 percent levy on vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz as compensation to the United States for ensuring the security of this key maritime route.
