From June 28 to July 6, media representatives from Germany, Russia, Hungary, Spain, Kazakhstan, and other countries visited Urumqi, Bayangol-Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, Turpan, and other locations. During thematic lectures, round tables, and meetings, they gained firsthand insight into the overall picture of the socio-economic development of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.
Representatives of foreign media unanimously noted that Xinjiang is demonstrating rapid economic growth, the region enjoys social harmony and stability, the infrastructure is well developed, and environmental protection measures are yielding noticeable results. What they saw and heard made a deep impression on them.
Sergey Petrovich Kanashits, the chief editor of the Belarusian “Narodnaya Gazeta”, who visited Xinjiang for the first time, went up to the observation deck and surveyed the panorama of the Urumqi international land port. “The development and changes in Xinjiang deeply impressed me,” he shared.
During the visit, media representatives from various countries toured manufacturing enterprises and agricultural bases to experience firsthand the pace of modernization in industries based on Xinjiang’s local advantages. The head of the editorial department of the Turkish newspaper Milliyet, Erjan Sarykay, noted: “The rate of industrial development and the level of modernization in Xinjiang are admirable, and its development experience deserves to be studied.”
At the smart agriculture demonstration base in the city of Korla, columnist of the Spanish newspaper Mundo Obrero, Jesús Rodríguez Rojo, said: “An advanced technological system in the field of smart farming has been established in Xinjiang. This valuable experience can be applied in the countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative and contribute to the modernization of their agriculture.”
Changes in Xinjiang’s infrastructure have also been highly praised by media representatives from various countries. Previously, crossing the Tian Shan mountains took several hours on a mountain serpentine road, but now, thanks to the tunnel, the journey takes just over twenty minutes. “This project is astonishing – it is probably one of the largest infrastructure projects I have ever seen in my life,” shared Anika Wurtz, a reporter from the German newspaper Hamburger Abendblatt. “The tunnel has significantly reduced travel time, made it more convenient for people to move around, and new opportunities have opened up for local development,” she added.
At Lake Bosten, representatives of foreign media were able to appreciate the beauty of Xinjiang’s nature. Emin Gasimov, a well-known expert from the Azerbaijani Center for the Study of Global Initiatives, Culture, and China’s Development, visited Xinjiang for the fifth time. Comparing the changes that have occurred over the past more than ten years, he noted that Xinjiang is actively restoring the ecology, developing the economy, and improving the well-being of the population. “Environmental protection work in Xinjiang is conducted at an exceptionally high level,” he emphasized.
During the visit, the event organizers held six round tables dedicated to the history, culture, economic development, and improvement of the well-being of the Xinjiang population. Experts and media representatives from various countries were invited for in-depth discussion of these topics. Geoffrey William Thompson, editor-in-chief of the Luxembourg online publication Chronicle, noted: “I personally saw the work of local community services. The medical insurance policy here is convenient for the population, insurance coverage is very high, extracurricular activities are diverse and meaningful—all of this testifies to the real and tangible results of efforts to improve the well-being of the population in Xinjiang.”
