Hohhot, July 13 /Xinhua/ — In recent years, there has been a steady improvement in pasture ecology in China. At the same time, both the functionality of pasture ecosystems and their productivity have noticeably increased, according to official data released on Monday.
Currently, in China, the area of pastures that are in a “healthy and relatively healthy state” amounts to about 180 million hectares. Their share has exceeded 70 percent of the total area of pasture lands in the country, according to a statement released as part of an event dedicated to the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists, held in the city of Hohhot, the administrative center of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in northern China.
The total area of pastures in China amounts to nearly 267 million hectares. By this measure, the country holds a leading position in the world.
For many years, China has intensified efforts to protect and restore pastures by implementing large-scale projects, strengthening control over pasture resources, and introducing subsidy and incentive measures aimed at encouraging the adoption of sustainable livestock farming methods.
During the implementation of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), China achieved an average annual restoration scale of degraded pastures exceeding 3 million hectares. At the same time, measures to combat rodents and insect pests were carried out annually on pastures covering more than 6.6 million hectares, and the annual fresh grass harvest during this period exceeded 600 million tons, indicating a stable recovery of pasture productivity.
As informed by the competent authorities of the country, during the implementation of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030), China will continue to improve the pasture management system and strengthen the capacity in the field of pastureland management.
