Beijing, July 13 /Xinhua/ — China’s Ministry of Water Resources on Sunday raised the warning level for heavy rainfall to “yellow,” which is expected from Sunday to Tuesday over a vast area of the country due to Typhoon Bavi.
China has a four-level flood warning system, with the highest danger level marked in red. It is followed in descending order by orange, yellow, and blue. A “yellow” warning implies increased readiness and the taking of precautionary measures.
Precipitation in Eastern, Central, Northern, and Northeastern China, including the Yangtze-Huaihe region and the Yellow River basin, is expected to reach from 40 mm to 90 mm, and in some places from 100 to 260 mm.
In the Haihe River basin, the first floods of 2026 have already occurred on several tributaries. The upcoming heavy rains are estimated to potentially cause new floods with numbering on major water bodies such as Lake Taihu, the Liao River, and the Songhua River /Sungari/.
In this regard, authorities remind of the need for increased vigilance regarding the risks of sudden floods, mountain streams, and urban flooding, urging the public to remain alert and avoid low-lying areas, underground passages, and mountain valleys during heavy rains.
